Deck cost in Dallas, TX (2026)
Planning a deck in Dallas? Here is what decks typically cost, what is different about building one in Dallas, and how to get a price range for your own yard in about two minutes.
Short answer
Using typical national ranges from published 2026 cost guides (the same sample rates as our calculator), an installed deck runs about $28 to $55 per square foot in pressure-treated wood, $45 to $78 in composite, and $58 to $95 in PVC or premium composite, from ground level up to a walkout or second-story deck. Railing and stairs are extra.
These are not Dallas prices. We do not have Dallas price data and we do not make up a local average. A local builder sets the real price after seeing your yard, height, footings, access and permit needs.

What is different about building a deck in Dallas
- In Dallas, decks, platforms and walks not more than 30 inches above grade and not over a basement or story need no building permit on single-family or duplex lots, except in areas like historic, conservation and planned development districts that have more requirements. (Dallas Building Inspection FAQ)
- Exterior work in a Dallas historic district needs an approved Certificate of Appropriateness before work starts. (Dallas Building Inspection FAQ)
- A homeowner may do general building work on their own property after getting the proper permits; electrical work must be done by a licensed electrician unless the homeowner qualifies with the Chief Electrical Inspector. (Dallas Building Inspection FAQ)
- Required front, side and rear yards (setbacks) must stay open and unobstructed except for fences, and the numbers come from your zoning district. Plan review and field inspections are at the Oak Cliff Municipal Center, 320 E. Jefferson Blvd, 214-948-4480. (Dallas Building Inspection FAQ)

Climate and materials in Dallas
Dallas summers are long and hot with strong sun, and winters are mostly mild with occasional hard freezes. Sun and heat fade and dry wood decking quickly, and dark composite boards get hot underfoot, so board color and shade are worth thinking about. Many North Texas lots sit on clay soils that swell when wet and shrink when dry, which affects footings.
Lots, slopes and deck height
Most Dallas-area homes are built on slabs without basements, and lots are fairly flat, so many decks are at ground level or a few steps up. That keeps many projects in the lower height levels, where the price per square foot is lowest. Fort Worth, Plano and the other DFW cities have their own permit rules.
When to plan
Building goes on most of the year here. Spring and fall are popular because summer heat slows outdoor work, so planning a few months ahead helps.

- Use the range to set a budget before you call builders, not as a price to hold anyone to.
- Height is the biggest lever. Measure from the ground to the door threshold where the deck will attach.
- Ask each builder whether the quote includes the permit, footings, railing, stairs and removal of any old deck, so you compare like with like.
