Deck cost in Columbus, OH (2026)
Planning a deck in Columbus? Here is what decks typically cost, what is different about building one in Columbus, and how to get a price range for your own yard in about two minutes.
Short answer
Using typical national ranges from published 2026 cost guides (the same sample rates as our calculator), an installed deck runs about $28 to $55 per square foot in pressure-treated wood, $45 to $78 in composite, and $58 to $95 in PVC or premium composite, from ground level up to a walkout or second-story deck. Railing and stairs are extra.

What is different about building a deck in Columbus
- In Columbus a deck is exempt from a building permit only if it is 200 square feet or less, no more than 30 inches above grade, not attached to the house, and does not serve the required exit door. (Columbus CIC-23 deck code information (PDF))
- Zoning approval is needed for any deck over 169 square feet. Where a deck is more than 30 inches above grade it needs a guard at least 36 inches high, and stairs with four or more risers need a handrail 34 to 38 inches high. (Columbus CIC-23 (PDF))
- The city's Typical Residential Projects list shows that building a deck needs a permit and plan review, with Building and Zoning Services at 614-645-7433. (Columbus Typical Residential Projects 2026 (PDF))
- Building and Zoning Services says residential plan review takes about one week, asks for two sets of plans, and lists footing, framing and final inspections. (Columbus BZS FAQ)

Climate and materials in Columbus
Central Ohio has cold winters with many freeze-thaw cycles and warm, humid summers. Moisture is the main enemy of a wood deck here: boards that stay wet under leaves or snow rot faster, and fasteners and connectors need to be rated for treated lumber. Composite and PVC trade a higher upfront price for less refinishing.
Lots, slopes and deck height
Much of Columbus is fairly flat, so many decks are at ground level or a few steps up from the back door. Homes with walkout basements on sloped or ravine lots are the exception, and those decks price at the higher height levels because of taller posts, stairs and railing.
When to plan
Plan review takes about a week, and footings need to be inspected before concrete, so a spring build goes smoother when the design is settled in winter.

- Use the range to set a budget before you call builders, not as a price to hold anyone to.
- Height is the biggest lever. Measure from the ground to the door threshold where the deck will attach.
- Ask each builder whether the quote includes the permit, footings, railing, stairs and removal of any old deck, so you compare like with like.
