Climate and materials in Charlotte
Charlotte has mild winters with occasional freezes and long, hot, humid summers. Moisture, mildew and insects are the bigger threats to a wood deck here than frost, which is part of why footings are shallow compared with northern cities. Good airflow under the deck, treated lumber rated for ground contact where needed, and regular cleaning go a long way.
Lots, slopes and deck height
Much of the Charlotte area is rolling, with clay soils, and many homes have a crawl space or basement with a back door a few feet above the yard. That puts a lot of decks in the "A few steps up" or "Raised" height levels. On soft soil, footings may need to go deeper than the minimum, which a builder prices after seeing the site.
When to plan
With shallow footings and mild winters, building can happen most of the year, but spring and early summer are popular. Planning ahead still helps you compare quotes without rushing.

- Use the range to set a budget before you call builders, not as a price to hold anyone to.
- Height is the biggest lever. Measure from the ground to the door threshold where the deck will attach.
- Ask each builder whether the quote includes the permit, footings, railing, stairs and removal of any old deck, so you compare like with like.
